Keeping a building cool in summer using air conditioning can use lots of energy!
Did you know that up to 97% of summer heat gain inside a building is caused by radiant heat transfer into the building from the sun shining on the roof. The solution is to reduce the transfer of heat into a building and therefore the amount of air conditioning required to cool it down. THE most effective way to achieve this is to apply Insultec heat reflective membrane, to the surface of the roof.

The effect of applying Insultec to a metal roof is to lower the surface temperature under sunlight by about 15°C. This reduction is significantly greater than can be achieved with ordinary paints or typical insulation.

Although light colours are the most effective (Queensland Air Conditioning Company MPN Timar Martin found that Insultec was 33% more effective than white paint in preventing heat transfer) Insultec also significantly out performs other coatings even in darker colours!!!!!

There have been many independent studies which demonstrate the reduction of internal temperature from applying Insultec to the roof of a building in a warm climate area. For example a research project by the Department of Public Works New South Wales for the Department of Education and Training found that the application of Insultec to a demountable classroom roof, resulted in a reduction in air conditioning energy consumption (and cost!) of 46%! The classroom with the Insultec treated roof also “received favourable comments from the teacher regarding the comfort conditions and reduced desire to use the air conditioning system, compared to past personal experience in other demountable buildings during summer.”

The impact of reduced air conditioning usage on the demand for electricity is considerable. On a large scale the collective effect of reducing the internal temperature of buildings in warm climates can have a significant impact on the demand for electricity and reduce loads on electrical networks in the summer.

Reducing the transfer of heat into your home or business means not only a more comfortable environment to live or work in, but also a reduction in the consumption of electricity to cool it .This leads directly to reducing your electricity bill and therefore your carbon tax exposure.

Research released by the Institute of Public Affairs in 2010 reveals electricity prices have increased at four times the rate of inflation over the last five years. Many analysts believe this trend will continue with electricity prices to at least double and perhaps triple over the next 10 years. This would mean the average household could expect to pay an extra $1500 per year for electricity by 2020, equivalent to about an extra $30 per week taken from the household budget.

“internal air conditioner usage and costs are now approximately half as much as previously.”John Mcllwarn Station Manager Bureau of Meteorology

What if you could reduce your energy consumption thus reducing your costs? YOU CAN with Insultec Heat reflective membrane, a low cost simple way of reducing your energy bills.

AE Smith Westair is the largest privately owned commercial air conditioning and mechanical services contractor in Australia. A study they performed in Karratha Western Australia found that the electricity consumption by the air conditioning system in a building with the roof painted with Insultec was 60% lower than that in a building not painted with Insultec. The graph below records the temperature variation measured from identical locations in the ceiling spaces of the two buildings.

A study carried out by the South Australian Department of Road Transport found similar reductions in internal temperatures following the application of Insultec. The reduction in internal temperatures, when the ambient temperature was the same, was found to be dramatic.

The Bureau of Meteorology in Charleville also found that the application of Insultec to the aging asbestos roof of its building not only significantly extended its life (saving the cost of re-roofing) but also found that “internal air conditioner usage and costs are now approximately half as much as previously.”

Reducing the energy consumption of your building will greatly reduce your exposure to the very real impact of electricity price increases on your household or businesses budget!

The governments of the world are determined to reduce emissions of CO₂. On a per capita basis, Australians are some of the largest CO₂ emitters in the world, producing more than 11 tons of power sector CO₂ emissions per person every year. Americans aren't far behind at more than 9 tons per person.

The generation of Electricity is one of the major sources of these emissions accounting for more than 37% of Australia’s total emissions www.aph.gov.au. If everyone in Australia could cut down their electricity usage by 15% we would save more than 36 million tonnes of carbon emissions. If companies with Carbon tax exposure reduce their electricity usage for cooling (remember Insultec can reduce this by more than 50% AE Smith Westair) they not only reduce their electricity bills but also reduce their liabilities under the recently introduced carbon tax.

What if you could reduce your carbon foot print, save money and make a more comfortable working/or home environment for your family/staff all for a relatively small cost. This can be achieved by reducing the summer heat gain inside a building which is caused by radiant heat transfer from the sun shining on the roof. Applying Insultec Heat Reflective Membrane to the roof and in some cases walls of the building will reduce the internal temperature thus reducing the demand on the air-conditioning, intern using less energy and reducing carbon emissions.

Extend the structural life of your building and save on maintenance. Not only is Insultec a heat reflective membrane it is also a protective coating that can increase the life of a substrate.

Insultec coatings are much thicker than ordinary paint coatings. This confers several benefits, quite apart from the rejection of unwanted heat. GHD Australia previously known as Taywood Engineering Ltd. of Western Australia has carried out tests that show the high resistance of Insultec coatings to water, carbon dioxide and chloride ion diffusion.

The excellent water proofing properties of Insultec have also been confirmed by the Bureau VERITAS (the world’s second largest group in conformity assessment and certification services in the fields of Quality, Health and Safety, Environment, and social responsibility QHSE and the world leader in QHSE.) The relative mechanical strength of Insultec compared with ordinary paint means that it should have a much greater life.

Of course, it must be remembered that, since Insultec is not an ordinary paint, it must be applied strictly in accordance with the specifications. When correctly applied, it awards considerable protection to the underlying material.

On metal, to reduce expansion and contraction, a cause of structural damage which requires continual maintenance or leads to premature replacement.

Metal Application of Insultec

Before

After

On concrete, the benefits are the same as with metal roofing when the concrete paint, Insultec Heat Reflective membrane is applied to the surface area. Not only do the heat reflective properties of this concrete coating lower the amount of heat conducted through the material to the inside of the building or structure, but there are other benefits too. The membrane helps reduce the contraction and expansion of the material, protect from wear and tear and thus reduce maintenance. It also protects the concrete from deterioration of concrete caused by the presence of contaminants or the action of weather combined with atmospheric properties such as CO2. This deterioration is colloquially known as “concrete cancer.”

Concrete Application of Insultec

Before

After

On Asbestos, through extensive research and development, Insultec developed Asbestos Seal Primer. The primer saturates the asbestos roof sheets to bind the asbestos fibres. The heat re-radiating membrane is then applied, improving the tensile strength of the roof and ensuring long durability against the unstable elements of the atmosphere.

Cello Paper Factory and Warehouse Asbestos Roof Encapsulation

Before

After

Insultec is also the most cost-effective method of handling asbestos with no down time for business and coming in at 66% cheaper than the cost of removal (costing from Sydney City Roofing) and replacement alone, let alone the cost to the business for loss of income if the replacement method is used.
